About Gloster

We first started making furniture over fifty years ago in West Africa. Firstly just for local market consumption but then, when we realized we were actually quite good at it, for export to Europe.

From the start we were always both environmentally and ethically aware - we even used the discarded branches and tree stumps, which would otherwise have been burnt, to make the smaller components.

In 1981, we started the Gloster brand. From quite humble roots, we were soon exporting our furniture all around the world. After transferring our African factory's expertise to Asia so that we could have access to the plantation grown teak that was only available in Indonesia, Gloster grew to be the principle high end worldwide brand for teak outdoor furniture over the 80s and 90s.

Now, more than fifty years since we started, we are worldwide leaders in teak, woven, aluminium, stainless steel and now outdoor lounge furniture.

Mark Gabbertas is an award winning furniture designer based in London. An intrinsic part of Mark's design process is the belief that at all times, the design of an object is governed by an appreciation of commercial realities. He believes passionately that if a great design does not sell, perhaps it is not such a great design.

Environment

Only premium plantation grown teak is used for Gloster furniture. While teak trees are not indigenous to Indonesia, climatic conditions on Java are ideal for growing this species of tree. Teak was originally introduced to the islands by Buddhist monks, some 700 years ago. When the Dutch colonised Indonesia in the 19th Century, they soon realized the opportunity to establish large plantations and introduced the sustainable plantation management systems that are still in use today.

Teak plantations are really no different than any other crop, except the growing cycle is far longer - 60 years or more from planting to harvesting. Within the plantations, the trees are continuously cared for by the local population and over their lifetime the trees are regularly pruned and the integrity of the plantations carefully maintained. This ultimately results in a better quality of timber - healthier wood, straighter grain and with less knots. Ideal for use in outdoor furniture.
