John Caldwell's presence in the outdoor furniture industry can hardly have gone unnoticed since a chance meeting with Bob Brown (of Brown Jordan) when he was a 19-year-old student. Caldwell showed Brown his furniture designs and was immediately taken to Brown Jordan's prototype factory. It was then John signed his first contract.
Having taught and lectured on design for 20 years at various California colleges, including Long Beach State, Pasadena City College and the Art Center College of Design, John also manages his own design studio, John Caldwell Design, located in South Pasadena, California. The studio maintains a staff of 7 people and works on products in several markets. From office furniture and ceiling fans to public and health care seating, John Caldwell's designs have been manufactured in the United States, Europe, China, Indonesia and Mexico, and have received numerous design awards worldwide.
“By definition, design is never finished. You can always improve a design. If someone says to me, 'That is perfect now, it cannot be touched, it can't be improved,' I can't accept that.”
Inspired by the likes of Hans J. Wegner, his personal interests in art history and specifically architecture led John to his trade. Travel is at the cornerstone of his designs, getting inspiration from his favourite destinations - Italy, Morocco and London, to name a few. Part of an art travel group, John travels at least once a year, visiting galleries and various environments where his inspiration for designs often begin. "It's funny how many times a sculpture or painting and the environment will affect me," says John.
