Why Teak Is the Gold Standard for Outdoor Furniture
For centuries, teak has been prized for its ability to withstand the elements while retaining its natural beauty. Used in shipbuilding, architectural applications, and fine furniture, this exceptional hardwood has long been considered one of the finest materials for outdoor use.
To this day, teak remains the gold standard for luxury outdoor furniture. Its unique qualities give it an inherent resilience that few other woods can match. But what exactly makes teak so well suited to life outdoors?
Why Teak Is Ideal for Outdoor Applications
Teak possesses many natural characteristics that make it special. Unlike many woods that require extensive treatments or thick protective finishes to withstand the elements, teak has a natural resilience built into the material itself. Its oils help repel water and provide protection against moisture and decay, while its dense structure helps minimize the impact of prolonged exposure to sun, rain, and fluctuations in temperature and humidity.
Teak is also valued for its stability. As an outdoor material, wood needs to accommodate natural changes in moisture without excessive warping, cracking, or deterioration. Teak's density and structure allow it to handle these conditions exceptionally well.

There is also something inherently beautiful about the way teak changes over time. Left outdoors, its warm natural tones gradually soften into an elegant silver-grey as the pigments in the surface layer fade. This transformation gives teak an evolving quality that allows a piece of furniture to develop its own sense of history.
But while teak is inherently well suited to outdoor living, the quality of the finished furniture depends on much more than the species of wood itself. Where the teak comes from, how long it is grown, how it is selected and prepared, and how it is crafted all make a difference.
What Makes Gloster Teak Different?
Gloster's relationship with teak goes far beyond selecting a beautiful hardwood. For decades, we have developed an in-depth understanding of how teak should be grown, harvested, prepared, and crafted for outdoor furniture.
Gloster teak is highly resistant to rotting and exceptionally durable against the elements, made not simply to withstand outdoor conditions, but to age gracefully within them. Every stage of the process contributes to this final result.
Growing Time
Quality teak cannot be rushed. Gloster sources teak from our carefully managed farms in East Java, Indonesia, where our trees are cultivated for decades before they are harvested.

Gloster selects trees that have reached a minimum age of approximately 35 years, with many reaching 35 to 50 years, as they develop the density and natural oil content that distinguish the high-quality teak needed for exceptional outdoor performance.
Careful Selection of Every Log
Once the teak has matured, Gloster's team carefully selects the finest logs for production, looking for desirable shapes and minimal natural defects.
This detailed selection process helps Gloster make the most of a valuable natural resource while ensuring that the teak entering production meets the standards expected of luxury outdoor furniture. Each teak log is chosen specifically for its quality and suitability for the finished piece.

One of the defining differences in Gloster's approach is our close oversight of the teak supply chain. Each finished piece can be traced back to its origin tree, providing a high level of transparency. That traceability is an important part of what makes Gloster teak distinctive. The story of the material does not begin when the furniture enters a showroom. It starts in the farm decades earlier.
Precision Preparation for Outdoor Performance
Before becoming furniture, Gloster teak is kiln dried for up to 4 months to ensure it reaches the optimal moisture content. This process prepares the timber for the demands of outdoor use while accounting for the natural movement that occurs as wood responds to changes in temperature and humidity.
Gloster’s understanding of teak extends to the details of its finish, too. Gloster buffed teak undergoes an enhanced surface preparation process that brings the wood’s natural oils to the surface and burnishes them into the timber. This creates a rich, lustrous sheen while enhancing the consistency and depth of the teak’s natural color.
Crafted by People Who Know Teak
Exceptional materials deserve exceptional craftsmanship.
Gloster's teak furniture is crafted in our production facility in Surabaya, Indonesia, where skilled artisans shape and refine the wood by hand. This close relationship between material and maker is central to the character of Gloster furniture.

Working with teak at this level requires an understanding of its grain, movement, texture, and natural variations. The craftsman's role is not simply to assemble the furniture, but to work with the material and bring out its qualities through every stage of production.
This combination of carefully cultivated teak and human craftsmanship is what sets Gloster furniture apart.
Made for a Lifetime Outdoors
Teak has earned its reputation as the gold standard for outdoor furniture for good reason. Its natural oils, dense grain, durability, and ability to weather beautifully make it perfect for life outside.
